"Under this decision, name changes will be essentially rubber stamped as long as it is not criminal or defrauds a creditor," attorney David Langdon tells reporters after the Ohio Supreme Court allowed a lesbian couple to share a last name.

The 2002 case, decided 6-1 in favor of Belinda and Jennifer Rylen, is the subject of the short documentary film What's in a Name by Cleveland Heights native Hallie Bourne, which will be screened on November 6 at the Ohio Independent Film Festival in Cleveland.

Langdon represented the anti-gay American Family Association, who the court allowed to argue against the name change. Representing the women was openly gay Cincinnati attorney Scott Knox, who was recognized by Lawyer's Weekly newspaper for his successful efforts in the case.

What's in a Name won an honorable mention at the Columbus Film and Video Festival, and has screened at other festivals, including the Austin Gay and Lesbian Film Festival. Bourne created the short as a precursor to a larger film on second-parent adoption, currently still in production. Because of the lack of cases in Ohio on the subject, however, Bourne has moved production to Pennsylvania, where the adoptions are more common.

What's in a Name, which is Bourne's first film, is also available for free to community organizations by contacting her at 614-208-2673 or whatsinaname@wowway.com.

The film will be shown with nine other shorts at 9 am on Thursday, November 6 as part of the Ohio Independent Film Festival. The screening is $10, and will be at the Gordon Square Theater of Cleveland Public Theater, 6415 Detroit Ave, Cleveland. For more information, call 216-651-7315, or log onto www.ohiofilms.com.
